Tai Ping and Dr. William Lim to Unveil "A Bright Future" at “Art in Resonance”
“A Bright Future” is an immersive installation created with the architect and artist, Dr William Lim. This work will be featured at "Art in Resonance" programme at The Peninsula Hong Kong from 23 March to 5 May, offering a physical exploration of the relationship between traditional textile arts and contemporary painting.
The installation is designed to be a spatial extension of the artist’s work, centred upon a 3M x 4.3M hand-tufted wall tapestry. This piece is a meticulous translation of Lim’s original oil-on-canvas painting into a rich textile medium. The experience is further enhanced by a hand-tufted floor carpet featuring a monochromatic checkered motif, which extends the visual narrative of the tapestry into the physical environment.
A Bright Future
The painting, part of Lim’s Journey series, depicts a boy gazing into a crystal ball, imagining a world where fish leap across the sky and the moon hangs low, a hopeful meditation on perspective, symbolism and the meeting of reality and imagination. The installation brings the painting to life through symbolic motifs and decorative objects, offering a sanctuary where visitors are invited to inhabit a future bright with possibility.
The Soul of the Canvas, Translated into Yarn
These detailed views reveal the intricate architectural translation of Dr William Lim’s original oil painting into a monumental 3m x 4.3m hand-tufted tapestry. At Tai Ping’s Xiamen workshop, a dedicated team of twelve master craftsmen—specialists in colour matching, sketching, and material processing—collaborated to achieve a mural-standard execution. Eschewing automated technology, the artisans relied purely on their senses and decades of experience to manually translate the artist’s vision.
This close-up of the hanging rug demonstrates the extraordinary level of detail achieved through Tai Ping’s manual tufting process. To translate Dr William Lim's original painting into this textile medium, artisans utilised a sophisticated blend of materials, including delicate silk and worsted wool, to recreate the subtle nuances of human form and expression.
This perspective showcases the technical complexity involved in translating Dr William Lim’s painterly aesthetic into a tactile medium. To capture the vibrancy of the central red vase and the plum tree blossoms, our artisans utilised specialized sculpting techniques and varying pile heights to create a three-dimensional finish that appears to "pop" from the tapestry surface. The contrast between the organic, shaggy piles of the rock garden and the rigid, hand-tufted checkered floor demonstrates the versatility of the textile medium when guided by decades of artisanal intuition.
In this detailed vignette, the human element of the composition is rendered with extraordinary precision using a custom palette of 505 dyed yarn colours. By blending materials such as delicate silk and worsted wool, the Xiamen workshop artisans achieved a mural-standard execution that captures the nuanced textures of the figure’s attire and the surrounding landscape. Every stitch was placed manually, without technological assistance, allowing the craftsmen to rely purely on their senses to translate the "soul" of the original oil painting into this monumental work.

Dr William Lim is an acclaimed architect, artist, and collector whose work explores the intersection of spatial design and contemporary art. As the founder of the award-winning firm CL3 Architects, Lim has shaped the architectural landscape of Hong Kong and beyond, bringing a unique cultural perspective to large-scale urban projects. His artistic practice often delves into themes of heritage and identity, utilizing his architectural background to manipulate form and perspective. Through this collaboration with Tai Ping, Lim translates his fluid, painterly visions into the structured world of textile art, bridging the gap between two-dimensional composition and three-dimensional experience.
