Château de la Gaude by Olivier Frémont, Aix-en-Provence

Architecture: Olivier Frémont

After three years of renovation and design, sleeping beauty Château de la Gaude opened in 2019. This former 17th century estate is known for its wine cellar, organic vineyards, and a stunning French garden, which is now classified as a historic monument.

In his redesign, French architect Olivier Frémont retained interior period details—including ornately figured mouldings and carved stone fireplaces—while opting to modernize floors, stairs, and walls. The effect: centuries of personality in one stunning setting.

Each of the 17 rooms and suites is unique. The design is simple and elegant, thrown into relief by bold centrepiece Tai Ping rugs. In these Chroma collection inspired hand-tufted pieces, purples, blues, and pinks fling themselves across the room, crackle to life, or flirt with a border. Their painted liveliness awakens the symmetry of their surroundings, complementing the otherwise rustic spirit of the place.

The round Tai Ping works that dot the parquet floors of the dining room serve another function. They blend in pale beige harmony with the other décor to create a discreet and comfortable ambiance.
