About André Fu

Celebrated Hong Kong-based international interior designer André Fu graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2000 and founded AFSO in the same year. Known for his modernist sensibilities and the serene, tactile essence of his interiors, his formidable client portfolio spans from luxury giants to major players from the hospitality sector. Fu and Tai Ping made their first collection together named after the designer in 2011. The success of this first collection led to the birth of the second collection, Scenematic, in 2017 where Fu challenges Tai Ping’s artisanal boundary further through a textile manifestation of intriguing urban silhouettes.

The André Fu collection blends an array of complex techniques with design sensitivity to create rugs of surprising and sophisticated textures. Using only the finest fibres - wool, silk, cashmere - the collection combines pile heights and yarn thickness with highly complex hand-tufting techniques to create rugs equivalent to haute couture. Rooted in a deep appreciation for intricate Chinese artisanship, heritage and fashion, the collection is imbued with subtle references to traditional tweed and brushstroke motifs inspired by Chinese calligraphy. The André Fu collection defines modern Asian luxury in a sophisticated line of 'textiles for the floor'.

André Fu’s second collaboration for Tai Ping pays poetic homage to the quintessential international urban landscape, with its modern architecture and shadows, and the subtle reflective qualities of water expressed through 13 distinctive cinematographic carpet designs.

Using highly complex, sensual textures hand-in-hand with an intricate combination of fibres from wool, silk and cashmere to linen, steele and glosilk, Fu’s designs reflect his own flâneur-like experience of the architecture of cities through a dream-like, pixelated, and abstract expression of intriguing urban silhouettes.

Tai Ping brings a 60-year heritage of artisanal skills in its first collection to feature both hand-tufted and hand-knotted techniques. The unique offering showcases Fu’s Sensory Dusk, Immersive Sunset, and Urban Nightfall design themes that express the city in a subtle evolution from natural daylight’s soft pastels, icy blue and mineral-like jade green, through the rustic cinnabar-reds of sunset, to the intense, midnight blue abstract celebration of nightfall.

“Scenematic is not about any one single element of a particular city” says Fu. “Instead, it represents the very sensual, subliminal cinematographic experience that comes from being immersed in the geometries, light, and reflections of an urban landscape – whether it be Paris, London, Tokyo or Hong Kong – at different times from dusk to dawn. The collection really embraces a flâneur-like interpretation of our urban life – it evokes memories of cities through the use of pattern, textures and materials to express fleeting impressions and images.”
