About the Collaborators

New York-based design Chen Chen and Kai Williams are known for their materials and process-based forms. This influential partnership long ago put the rulebook aside, playfully challenging the codes of object design and experimenting with materials to seek out new forms. From the metamorphic to the functional, their expertly-crafted work explores material fluidity in ever-changing spaces.

Their Cold Cut Coasters collection for Tai Ping explores the theme of anagram through new takes on one of their most emblematic works: coasters made from an aggregation of wood, resin and fabrics. The duo also designed Riprap for the Edition One collection.

Tai Ping’s limited edition, entitled Cold Cut Coasters, explores the theme of anagram through new takes on one of Chen Chen & Kai Williams’s most emblematic works: coasters made from an aggregation of wood, resin and fabrics cut in the mass. Bringing its own know-how into the frame, Tai Ping rose to the challenge for this cutting-edge hook-up, the result being creations that can be displayed on the wall or floor.

“Tai Ping helped us to reinterpret the visual aspect of the coasters and the underlying spirit of the process of creating an amalgam of materials”— Chen Chen The unique designs, each limited to twelve editions and two sizes, transcend the materials typically used by the design duo with fabrics including wool, cotton lace, polyamide, linen, chenille, cotton, viscose, bamboo, lurex, PVC, felted wool and delicate silk.

“The sheer variety of materials made available to us by Tai Ping was fantastic and deeply inspiring”— Chen Chen
