Photography: Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto
Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto is built on the site of the original residence of the Kitake, the executive branch of the Mitsui family. Neighbouring Nijō-jo Castle, it stands proudly in the heart of Kyoto’s city centre.
Designed by Tai Ping collaborator André Fu, The Mitsui epitomizes serene luxury. The hotel reimagines the traditional Japanese tearoom—a nod to its storied location. Fu’s design aim was to preserve a sense of heritage with contemporary overlay. He focused on artisanal traditions, keeping the space grounded and authentic.
Tranquil Tai Ping custom carpets complement the carefully chosen natural materials. In communal spaces, the floor coverings call to mind the rich brown of freshly tilled soil and birchwood slabs. In the suites, delicately textured works bring tranquil forestry underfoot.
